The shells of Centaurus A

Shells of Cen A
Unsharp mask copying of deep plate of the radio galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) revealed a series of shells that were identified as merger remnants in a plate taken by John Graham on the Cerro Tololo 4m Telescope. One of the inner shells is better seen on our colour picture, which also shows the innermost shell in the NE (upper left) quadrant. Another colour image made with an unsharp mask shows much detail in the dustlane of this fascinating galaxy The print from which this picture was made was published in Astrophysical Journal Letters in 1983.
